Sew Me Up

Previously marginalized forms of craft such as sewing and embroidery have emerged in this decade as viable and relevant media for the fine artists. From the feminists of the 1960’s who saw the use of material and thread as a way of honoring “women’s work” to artists of all genders and agendas working today, this kind of materiality is abundant in contemporary art making.

The artists in this exhibition not only all use embroidery or sewing as their medium, but they all also address the human body as their subject matter. With thread and fabric, they depict both our insides and our outsides in ways that are erotic, subversive, sacred, and personal. Using sources such as photographs, MRI scans and anatomy illustrations as a point of departure, these artists handcraft their unique interpretations into tactile forms and images that seem familiar and yet unexpected.

Artists: Lily DeSaussure, Orly Cogan, Rachel Bernstein, Jennifer Boe and Maria St. Clair. Curated by Susan Jamison.
